The Geeks

Luc “Skywalker” Ippersiel, Editor-in-Chief

Luc Ippersiel has been a geek since the tender age of 2 when he discovered he could run a Vic20 personal computer.  His geekness continued to grow as he discovered video games in the form of Atari 2600.  After discovering these two avenues, Luc continued to cement his geek label when he started to read comics and adventure books.

As time went on, Luc continued to demonstrate his geek cred with experience as a freelance web designer and computer technician, work at RadioShack, and currently as a computer programmer for a financial company.  Today Luc is known as the office geek, the person people turn to to know about technology.

Bob “Starbuck” Starr, Managing Editor

The first movie Bob ever saw in a theater was Star Wars Episode IV : A New Hope (but back then geeks just called it Star Wars). He was only three but from that experience came two things: the foundation of his geek nature and the aspiration to one day get his own film on the big screen. The latter happened in 2008 when Bob’s war drama, The Sandbox, played in select theaters in Indiana. Since then Bob has written two other Indie films but realized his true passion for writing lies in more journalistic pursuits.

Taking his background in technology, love of entertainment and the written word Bob focuses on being a tech savvy entertainment journalist. Embracing the Web and social media sites like Twitter Bob strives to bring Hollywood news to as many readers as he can. Lucky enough to have crossed “Meet the real Boba Fett” off his bucket list, Bob still hopes to report from the San Diego Comic-Con one day and cross paths with Aaron Sorkin. When Bob’s not writing he’s playing technical support for his family, watching TV or going to movies.

Michael Kasaboski, Writer

Mike’s life as a geek-  and pop-culture junkie began in 1977 when his Dad took him to see Star Wars.  This was the first movie he’d ever seen in a theatre and the catalyst for his unending fascination with outer space, science and, of course, Star Wars itself.  Mike also discovered his latent, perhaps mutant, ability to draw at a very, very early age when his Dad put a pencil in his tiny hand and asked him to draw a circle.  Having never held a pencil before Mike proceeded to draw a small, perfectly formed loop. Pencil and paper have rarely been far from his grasp ever since.

Building on these early discoveries and fascinations, Mike’s formative years soon became a long string of pop-culture consumption and analysis.  He learned to read from a Captain America comic book, witnessed the first ever space shuttle launch and was nicknamed “The TV Guide” by his uncle based upon his uncanny knowledge of television programming.  The Commodore Vic 20 and 64 provided Mike with his first computing and gaming experiences while the dawn of the VCR revolutionized both his movie and television watching.

Mike’s enormous appetite for all media was fatefully complimented by the fact that his youth happened to coincide with the late 70’s and the 1980’s – a classic period in history, ripe with a cultural and technological explosion of advancements.  With a background in film and video production, Mike continues to write, draw and create on a daily basis.  The internet and most recently, social media, have provided some of the most inspiration and opportunity in his entire life.

Adam Samec, Writer

Adam has been a geek since the day he could crawl. Always an imaginative boy, he would tie a towel around his neck and fly around the yard pretending to be Superman. His love for all things cartoon crystallized one sunny afternoon in July of 1984 when he heard the cartoon opening of He-Man and the Masters of the Universe. It’s not every day that you get to hear one of the icons of 80s cartoons say your name.

From there it wasn’t long before his interest in cartoons became a full blown obsession that required spending money and a tremendous amount of time trying to see all that he could. From some of the more popular shows, Transformers, G.I. Joe and Centurions to some of the lesser known fare like Visionaries, Pirates of Darkwater and Getter Robo, he has watched and continues to watch a variety of work in the traditional animation field.

A self-styled stealth geek (someone who is a geek at heart, but doesn’t appear to be one at a casual glance) Adam has diverged his cartoon craziness into comics, film  and roleplaying, all of which are life-long passions for him. A teacher by profession, Adam makes every effort to spread his knowledge and love for comics and cartoons to the students he teaches. He even goes so far as to make his students research various comic heroes and villains!

Michael Kaiser, Writer

Michael Kaiser, often known online as Kaiser The Great (because let’s face it, he is!) was raised on a steady diet of 100% purebred geek. Cutting his teeth on the likes of Star Wars, He-Man, Thundercats and G.I. Joe, he eventually adopted a steady diet of comic books and Star Trek that he managed to stick to for a good twenty plus years until he ultimately fell victim to heartburn.

As his current job has absolutely nothing to do with geekiness, he spends most of his off time looking for geek outlets and plotting out a plan to ensure his newly born son grows up geek too, much to his wife and step-daughter’s annoyance.  He’s also recently begun getting geeky about Bay Area sports, but mostly to spy on the jocks and make sure they aren’t plotting against us.

He’s happy to have been given the opportunity dish about geek stuff via this website (even though they made him write a bio about himself in third person).

Michael vanRoon, Writer

The Science Fiction/Fantasy genre bled all over me at a tender age, when i first saw the series The Hulk on an old black and white television back in the late.. well.. IMDB it and you’ll see.

Naturally curious, and a tinkerer by blood on my fathers side, I grew up with computers before they became a staple in every household. Having a natural knack for technology and design, has always been a challenge and keeps both half of my brain stimulated.

Addicted to coffee and cigarettes, this politically incorrect geek will keep the conversation flowing, or kill a thought with a few words. Instigator, lemming, loud mouth and fanboi.. I’m the Jack of all trades and master of none.
